Does anyone else have a favourite restaurant? Tom and I do and we do not go there frequently enough! Bambu is a Vietnamese restaurant in Colchester, down at the Hythe near the university. We first went there 3 years ago when we were actually studying at uni! We fell in love with it immediately and have returned a few times a year since.
Tom and I live on Mersea Island, so we are not short of options for good food places. However, living on a small island does have its disadvantages. I work in Colchester so I get to leave it most days and see different people, but, those who work on the island find that it becomes claustrophobic and quite toxic. You see the same people everyday, go to work and usually end up at the same pub. Which is fine, but everyone needs a change now and then! As much as we love living here, we also love leaving it behind for a holiday or meal every now and again!
A couple of weeks ago, we decided to break our usual Friday routine of pub then takeaway, and swap it for a meal out. Bambu was our chosen destination (as it usually is) and it did not disappoint. In fact, both of us said it was the best food we’ve ever had there. But that could be because it had been a while!
You always know it’s a decent restaurant when you HAVE to book. Tom phoned up Tuesday and they were so busy, we could only have the table for an hour and a half! Fear not, there’s a bar you can enjoy drinks at which Tom and I don’t mind doing if we can’t have the table for a long time. Luckily, they said we didn’t have to vacate at half 8 as we were originally told so we enjoyed some drinks at our table.
The menu is full of traditional Vietnamese dishes and the flavours are just simply fantastic. They have an everyday menu and small specials boards that they place on the table. Instead of having 2 or 3 courses, we always order starters to share so we can enjoy a bit of everything! I think they only thing on their menu we haven’t tried is the tofu because I can’t stand the texture.
We ended up having 7 starters (sounds a lot but remember we shared and they’re too delicious to not get that many). As you can see from the pictures, they all look – and taste – delicious. We had; squid with sweet chilli sauce, crispy veggie spring rolls, chicken satay skewers, fruity tamarind chicken wings, fruity spare ribs (incredible), pork pot stickers and their special king prawn starter. All of them were incredible and we can’t wait to go back! We’re definitely not going to leave it as long next time though. It is also very reasonably priced all of that food and drinks came to £70 and that’s with the service charge added on! We think it’s fantastic value!
