It’s often said that dogs are a mans best friend, and this may be true, but in my case, my dog is definitely my best friend. We have formed such a bond, that when I go to work I actually miss him and cannot wait to get home to have a cuddle. I imagine that’s how people feel when they have a baby! We’ve had Hendricks for six weeks now and he’s changed our lives so much. We adore having him and we’re totally in love.
But one of the best things about having a dog, is how good they are for mental health. Dogs are used for therapy and it’s clear why. They do become your best mate and they offer so much comfort. Hendricks is such a mummy’s boy and I suppose he is a bit spoilt but he’s so well behaved and extremely sociable so we don’t regret anything we do. He knows his boundaries and he is so content, that it makes us happy knowing he has such a good life.
For me, having Hendricks has changed my life as he offers me comfort when Tom’s not here, and more importantly, company. Ever since January, I have been working from home, so for the first three weeks, I was able to just concentrate on my blog and doing things for myself, that would perhaps help me for the future. But since having Hendricks, I can’t imagine being on my own during the day for that long. I think my neighbours must think I’m insane because I have full blown conversations with him!
Having a dog also makes you more active. Since being able to take Hendricks out for a walk, I do around 7500 steps each day, whereas before, there’s no way I would have managed that. It’s easier to get up in the mornings knowing he needs a walk and his breakfast before leaving the house. Going to the gym was always such a chore but I love taking him on walks! It’s such good exercise and it makes me more sociable too as I have to talk to people while we’re out and make conversation with them.
Hendricks is also great for anxiety. There are days where I just don’t want to get out of bed, or do anything at all, but I have to for Hendricks and that makes me feel better straight away. I know he has needs and only I can do those things for him as Tom isn’t here. Taking him for walks help massively too. They mean I’m not sitting in all day seeing no one, but using some of that energy that makes me feel so wound up and releasing it in a positive way. I’ve found that having Hendricks is such a big comfort to me as having one cuddle from him, makes me feel so happy. He’s been so good for me in terms of feeling less anxious and unhappy. Starting a new career is scary and uncertain. It’s stressful and it makes you wonder if you’re doing the right thing or not. But, with Hendricks, knowing he’s content and has a good life makes all the difference.
So if you suffer with poor mental health, getting a dog is the best thing you can do as it really makes you think about something else other than the problems in your head and help the physical symptoms that come with it. I can’t imagine life without Hendricks now and we’re both so glad we decided to get him!
